Outreach & mentorship

We prioritize outreach where STEM access is limited, and we mentor the teams who ask. Here's where we went, and what came of it.

Outreach

Top three programs, run across the DECODE season.

India outreach

We traveled to a region of India where robotics and engineering education was virtually absent. Across five classes at Madinaguda Government School in Telangana, we presented what robotics is and what careers it opens — overcoming a complete language barrier to do it. We let students drive a robot we'd built from real FTC parts, then ran a paper-slider engineering competition they went all out on.

Result: the school launched an engineering class, giving 400 students a path into STEM.

The team explained everything in a simple, easy to understand way, which made learning exciting and fun. I now dream of becoming an engineer.

Rockwell Science Fair

We ran a booth showcasing what FIRST Robotics offers kids, and brought the robot so they could see it move. We interacted with about 50 kids, around 30 said they wanted to learn more, and we ran out of FIRST pamphlets.

Result: girls from the Northshore School District joined FLL and FTC teams after meeting us — several went on to win an FLL scrimmage Robot Performance Award.

Redmond Library Robotics Workshop

We ran a workshop at Redmond Library to get more kids into FIRST. After the information portion we set them a hands-on engineering challenge to test their skills. About 20 kids joined to learn how to get started, and 15 left interested in starting with FIRST.

Teams we've mentored

We were a rookie team not long ago. Everything we learned the hard way, we hand over.

BossBotix — FTC 33829

🏅 5th place, India National Championship

We mentored BossBotix through the DECODE season from the other side of the world, sharing what we'd learned about shooter design, software architecture and how to structure a season. They went on to place 5th at the India National Championship — comfortably the result we're proudest of that isn't our own.

What we shared

  • Shooter and transfer design decisions from our own iteration, including the failures.
  • Software structure — subsystems, commands and how to keep an autonomous consistent.
  • Season planning and portfolio guidance ahead of judging.

Bot Not Found

Our neighbours in team number. Repeated practice scrimmages to sharpen both teams' driving, and we swap parts whenever either of us runs short.

Bot Got Found

We helped start this rookie team alongside 23404, then gave them a genuinely competitive environment to test their robot in before their first event, as well as mentorship.

Pangolins in Disguise

Practical guidance on planning and running outreaches — how to pitch a school, what activity actually holds a room of ten-year-olds, and how to follow up.

26022 OctoSquad

We worked through ways to improve their intake system during INTO THE DEEP, and got a second perspective on ours in return. We also shared robot photos to give them ideas to build from.

Beyond individual teams

  • FTC WA Discord — we've helped 45+ teams with software, hardware and portfolio questions, and hand out cards to new teams so they find the same help we did.
  • FIRST Mentor Initiative — we joined to support rookie teams whenever they need assistance.
